TBF Develops ZemaSol™, a Widely Applicable, Safer and VOC-compliant Solvent| The Green Solvents Show #003

The Green Solvents Show #003

ZemaSol™ is a very effective and efficient solvent alternative for xylene, Parachlorobenzotrifluoride (PCBTF), Tertiary Butyl Acetate (TBAc) or toluene. A multi-purpose and cost-effective solvent, ZemaSol™ is widely used in industrial cleaning and formulations for epoxies, urethanes, alkyds, inks, and adhesives.

It is also very effective as a multi-purpose cleaner. ZemaSol’s unique properties are very effective at reducing viscosity of products and allows formulators to improve sprayability, flow and dry of coatings.

ZemaSol™ is considered an environmentally friendly solvent. It has a very low Maximum Incremental Reactivity (MIR) value, no ozone creators or depletors and no HAPs. It is VOC-compliant in US and
Canada and considered an Ultra-low VOC in South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). It is also a low odor solvent, non- carcinogenic, non-mutagenic and a preferred solvent in improving occupational health and safety.

Invest 20 minutes to listen to The Green Solvents Show. Host Erik Reynolds interviews Dave Pasin, President of TBF Environmental about ZemaSol™, its applications, how it is safe, environmentally friendly and replacing conventional solvents.

How did ZemaSol™ come about?

Dave begins this podcast by explaining how ZemaSol™ was conceived. TBF developed ZemaSol™ to  replace certain toxic and polluting solvents. TBF engaged with industry customers to learn their requirements in a replacement solvent.

What is ZemaSol™ and how is it different from other zero VOC solvents in the market?

ZemaSol™ has better solvency and lower odor compared to conventional solvents. It is a versatile solvent for cleaning, and used in the formulation of epoxy, urethanes, alkyds, inks, and adhesives.

How does ZemaSol™ work in different formulations such as epoxies and alkyds etc.?

ZemaSol™ is very effective in rapidly reducing solids content and viscosity of epoxy resins. It is a very efficient solvent and can reduce solids from 100% to 60-50% rapidly using minimal solvent. It works in a similar manner for urethane polyols, and alkyd top primers and top coats. It is also an effective cleaner for epoxy, urethane, alkyds paints, coatings, application equipment as well as inks and adhesives.

ZemaSol™ is a fast, efficient solvent for dissolving thermoplastic acrylics in inks, concrete coatings, sealers, glazes.

How ZemaSol™ is better for the environment?

ZemaSol™ exhibits an ultra-low Maximum Incremental Reactivity (MIR) value, which means it has a minimal impact on creating smog. ZemaSol contains no Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs), ozone creators or depletors. It is non mutagenic and non-carcinogenic.

Can ZemaSol™ be used for cleaning applications?

ZemaSol™ is a very effective, multi-purpose cleaner for equipment hard surfaces, paint and adhesives. It has no obnoxious fumes and is a safer solvent for use with open type cleaning systems.

During the podcast, Dave also discusses:

  • Issues, implications for formulations and toxicity with using tert-Butyl Acetate (TBAc).
  • TBAc is under review by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and the EPA.
  • How ZemaSol™ solves problems associated with TBAc.
