TBF Develops Safer, Non-polluting Solvents | The Green Solvents Show #002

The Green Solvents Show #002

Many conventional solvents in common use are harmful to the environment and human health. Many solvents emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which contribute to the formation of ground-level smog. Some are Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs), and ozone creators or depletors. Many solvents are toxic to fish and humans.

TBF has developed alternative solvents which emit very low or zero levels of VOCs and are considered VOC-compliant, non-HAPs, do not create or deplete ozone, and are less toxic. TBF solvents, however, perform as well or better as the solvents they replace in most applications.
Invest 20 minutes to listen to The Green Solvents Show. Host Erik Reynolds interviews Dave Pasin, President of TBF Environmental, about TBF products, their applications, and how they are replacing conventional solvents.

What makes TBF’s Green Solvents Different?

Dave begins this podcast by explaining the term “green solvents” and its broad and mis-leading use. Not all green solvents are the same. So-called “green” “bio-based” solvents are derived from biomass like corn or soy. However, many bio-solvents, although less toxic, also contain VOCs. Some bio-solvents use ethanol which is a known VOC. Dr. Schwartz from the University of California discovered that the VOCs released from bio-solvents can create a layer of ozone, a precursor to smog.

TBF solvents, by contrast, are blended from other solvents which are VOC-exempt, and are therefore zero-VOC or VOC-compliant. They do not cause smog.

TBF’s Three Principles

TBF follows three principles in developing new solvents.

First, every new solvent must be VOC-compliant. This means that the new solvent, when tested using the standard EPA or ASTM tests, demonstrates zero or very low levels of VOCs. This allows the solvent to pass all of the VOC content regulations so it may be used everywhere in the US and Canada.

Next, the product must be safe for people and the environment. It must reduce the exposure to toxins relative to the solvent it is replacing. This improves the health and safety of workers and users.

Lastly, the product must be effective in a wide range of applications. This allows the product to make a large impact in reducing the harmful effects of conventional solvents.

By following these key rules, TBF has developed several greener solvents that replaces several conventional industrial solvents with non-polluting solvents.

What does TBF products replace?

TBF has developed 6 VOC-compliant solvents to replace specific conventional solvents:

  1. ShiraSol™ Displaces slow evaporating solvents, like mineral spirits.
  2. KradaSol™ Displaces hexane; dissolves block polymers.
  3. BerdeSol™ Displaces heptane; used in aerosol brake cleaners.
  4. ZemaSol™ Displaces Xylene, Toluene, PCBTF and TBAc.
  5. EkaSol™ Displaces MEK and Acetone; dissolves resins for coatings.
  6. TergoSol™ Displaces MEK and Acetone in precision cleaning.

During this podcast, Dave also discusses:

  • Practical applications of TBF products
  • Different uses of TBF solvents
  • Benefits of a better air quality

TBF Environmental Technology (TBF) manufactures solvents designed to meet and / or exceed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State VOC emission requirements.  TBF’s innovative solvents are used to manufacture products that are significantly less hazardous to human health and reduce VOC emissions as compared to traditional solvents.
